    What is Voice Convergence?

    Voice Convergence, often referred to as FMC (Fixed-Mobile Convergence), connects mobile voice services with a business communication platform. Traditionally used with PBX and Centrex solutions, it is now commonly integrated with Unified Communications (UC) and value-added service (VAS) platforms. This enables a seamless voice experience across mobile devices, fixed lines, softphones and applications.

    Voice Convergence operates directly on the mobile service, allowing users to continue using their native mobile dialler while benefiting from business communication services delivered by the Service Provider platform.

    With Transatel’s Voice Convergence service, voice control and call routing are delegated to the Service Provider’s platform, while Transatel provides the mobile connectivity layer and mobile call termination.

    It can be used in conjunction with SMS Recording to provide a comprehensive compliance and communications solution across both voice and messaging services.

    How does Voice Convergence work?

    Calls to and from mobile subscribers are routed between the Transatel mobile network and the Service Provider’s platform through a SIP interconnection. The Service Provider can then apply its own call handling logic and services before routing the call to its final destination.

    What can the Service Provider do with Voice Convergence?

    Voice Convergence allows Service Providers to integrate mobile users into their communication environment and apply services such as:

    • Unified Communications (UC)
    • Call routing
    • Hunt groups
    • IVR services
    • Call recording
    • Analytics and compliance services
    • Voicemail
    • Call forwarding
    • Internal extension dialling and private numbering plans

    What types of calls are supported?

    Voice Convergence supports a variety of call scenarios, including:

    • Calls from mobile users to public destinations
    • Calls to mobile subscribers
    • Calls between mobile and fixed users
    • Calls to hunt groups
    • Calls between subscribers within the same organisation or service environment
    • Voicemail and call forwarding scenarios

    Emergency calls are always handled directly by the serving mobile network and are not routed through the Voice Convergence platform.

    Who manages the voice services?

    The Service Provider manages the voice services and call handling logic through its own platform. This may include voicemail, call forwarding, call recording, IVR applications, analytics, Unified Communications services and other value-added services.

    Transatel remains responsible for mobile network services, subscriber connectivity and call termination towards mobile users.

    Is voicemail available?

    Yes. By default, voicemail is managed by the Service Provider platform.

    Optionally, Service Providers may use the Transatel Voicemail Service, which supports multiple languages including English, French, German, Italian, Dutch and Chinese.

    Is call forwarding supported?

    Yes. Call forwarding is typically managed by the Service Provider platform, allowing the Service Provider to control forwarding logic as part of its Unified Communications and value-added services environment.

    Optionally, call forwarding can be activated at mobile network level. In this configuration, the forwarding decision is performed by the mobile network rather than the Service Provider platform. As a result, the Service Provider does not have direct control or visibility of the forwarding status through its own provisioning interfaces or APIs.

    This optional mode is generally intended for deployments where call forwarding is not managed by the Service Provider platform.

    Does Voice Convergence work when roaming?

    Yes. Voice Convergence services are available whether the subscriber is connected to the home network (HPLMN) or roaming on a visited network (VPLMN). Mobile-originated and mobile-terminated calls continue to be routed through the Voice Convergence architecture, allowing the Service Provider to apply the same call handling logic and value-added services regardless of the subscriber’s location.

    Does Voice Convergence support VoLTE and VoWiFi?

    Yes. Voice Convergence is compatible with Voice over LTE (VoLTE), allowing subscribers to benefit from modern all-IP mobile voice services.

    Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) is also supported where available in the home territory.

    Voice Convergence also supports AMR-WB (Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband) codec technology, delivering HD Voice quality where supported by the mobile network and devices.

    Are supplementary telephony services supported?

    Yes. Voice Convergence supports a range of supplementary telephony services that can be managed either by the Service Provider platform or through the mobile service configuration, depending on the deployment model.

    Supported services include:

    • Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR)
    • Call Hold
    • Call Waiting
    • Three-Party Calling (3PTY)
    • Call Forwarding
    • Voicemail services

    In the UK, users can also manage caller ID presentation on a per-call basis using standard prefixes such as 141 (withhold caller ID) and 1470 (release caller ID).

    How is connectivity established?

    Voice Convergence uses a SIP interconnection between the Service Provider platform and Transatel. The Service Provider platform communicates with Transatel’s network through dedicated SIP trunks and Session Border Controllers (SBCs).

    The interconnection can be implemented using internet-based or dedicated IP connectivity, depending on the Service Provider’s requirements.

    A Service Provider may connect multiple platforms or environments, such as production and test systems, through the Voice Convergence interconnection architecture.
